Garden furniture and seasonal items ready for storage
Seasonal storage: room for what you don't need right now

Garden furniture in winter, Christmas decorations in summer, skis and winter tyres out of season — they fill your shed, garage or attic while you don't use them for months. Seasonal storage gives that space back without getting rid of anything. This guide shows what to store seasonally, how to prepare it, and why it's smarter than it looks.

SEASONAL STORAGE: SPACE WHEN YOU NEED IT

Seasonal storage means temporarily setting aside items you only use part of the year, so your home, shed or garage doesn't fill up. Think garden furniture, Christmas decorations, winter tyres and ski or camping gear. You pay monthly and get everything back when the season turns again — without throwing anything away. For most seasonal items you only need a small space.

GARDEN & OUTDOORS

Garden set, lounge sofa, parasol, BBQ and cushions: in the way 6 months a year. How to store them well:

  • Clean + completely dry before storage
  • Disassemble what you can; parasol in a cover
  • Cushions in breathable covers (no plastic — causes mould)
  • BBQ: clean the grill thoroughly; gas bottle stays home (prohibited)

HOLIDAYS & DECORATIONS

Artificial tree, lights, decorations: used a few weeks, in the way all year.

  • Sturdy, labelled boxes — you'll find everything again in December
  • Fragile items (glass baubles): separate with bubble wrap
  • Light strings wound around cardboard — avoids knots
  • Also: Easter items, Halloween, birthday decorations

SPORTS & LEISURE

Skis, snowboard, camping gear, tent, extra bikes — classic attic material. If you've cleared your attic, this is the easiest way to keep it that way.

  • Skis: wash + wax before storage (prevents rust on bindings)
  • Tent + sleeping bags: completely dry, or you get mould
  • Camping gas or butane: does not go into storage — prohibited
  • Extra bikes: cleaned + chain oiled before storage

CLOTHING & TYRES

Swap your winter and summer wardrobe: the half you're not wearing goes away. See our guide on packing clothes for the details.

  • Clothes: clean + dry, in breathable covers or boxes
  • Winter tyres: stacked or hanging, vertical, cool and dark
  • Mark tread direction (rotation next season)
  • Ski boots + boots: paper inside — keeps their shape

HOW TO PREPARE SEASONAL ITEMS

Clean everything and dry it completely before it goes into storage — especially garden furniture and cushions, or musty smells and mould can develop (see the Dutch Milieu Centraal for moisture-prevention tips). Disassemble what you can, use covers for textiles and sturdy, labelled boxes for the rest. In climate-controlled storage your things stay dry and at temperature, ready to use again next season.

WHY SEASONAL STORAGE IS SMART

You win back space at home without getting rid of things you'll be glad to have again in a few months. It's more flexible and cheaper than a bigger home or a fixed garage, and with us it comes to you. Below are the answers to the questions we get most about seasonal storage.

🏠 Space back in your shed, garage, attic or storage room

💸 Cheaper than a bigger home or a fixed garage

📅 Cancel monthly — pay only during the off-season

🚚 We pick up and bring back when the season turns

HOW LONG DO I STORE SEASONAL ITEMS?

Usually half a year to a season — exactly the period you don't use your garden furniture or skis. At Inbox you rent from one month and cancel monthly, so you only pay as long as you actually need the space.

WILL MY ITEMS GET DAMAGED?

Not in dry, climate-controlled storage — as long as you pack everything clean and dry. Damp and temperature swings are the biggest culprits for seasonal items; that's exactly what our climate-controlled, secure spaces are built for.

CAN I ACCESS IT IN BETWEEN?

With seasonal storage you usually plan pickup and return around the season — out once, back once. The unit comes to you, so there's nowhere to drive. If you do want access in between, that's possible by appointment.

WHAT DOES SEASONAL STORAGE COST?

Seasonal items often fit in a small space (4-8 m³), so it needn't be expensive. See what storage costs per month for prices by volume, or work out your exact price with our calculator.
