CLEARING YOUR ATTIC: HOW TO TACKLE IT
Short answer: start with a goal, work in blocks of one to two hours and sort by category rather than at random. Decide per item: keep, give away, sell or bin. Rule of thumb: if you haven't used something in the past year, chances are it can go. The full method is in our home decluttering guide — here we zoom in on attic-specific steps.

⏱️ Plan in blocks of 1-2 hours — not all at once
📦 Get ready: boxes, bin bags, labels and cleaning supplies

1. PICK A STARTING SPOT
Take one defined spot of about 2 m² at a time — not the whole attic at once.
- Start with the spot most in your way — the biggest win
- No preference? Begin on the left as you enter, work clockwise
- Keep a clear route — or you'll feel overwhelmed
- Timer for 1-2 hours — don't bulldoze on until you're exhausted
2. SORT BY CATEGORY
Sort by category — not at random. Make four bins/zones: keep, give away, sell, bin. In doubt? See our guide on throwing away or storing.
- Categories: clothing, Christmas, books, tools, photos, kids' items
- Separate maybe-box for what you can't decide yet
- Timer per sub-task — don't get stuck on old photos/magazines
- Decide per item: max 30 seconds — first instinct is usually right
3. CLEAN AND ORGANISE
Zone empty? Clean thoroughly straight away and organise.
- Dust, vacuum the corners, wipe the floor
- Put back in fixed zones
- Rarely used at the back, frequently used within reach
- Reclaimed space stays usable only if kept orderly
4. REMOVE THE EXCESS RIGHT AWAY
Remove the excess right away — or they'll 'be allowed to stay after all'.
- Bin pile straight in the car — don't leave it in the hall
- Donate via Kringloop Nederland — pickup service available for larger items
- Book bulky-waste collection or recycling centre (same week)
- Sell: Marktplaats/Vinted — with a hard deadline (one month, then donate)
WHAT NOT TO KEEP IN THE ATTIC
An attic swings widely in heat and humidity — ruinous for certain items. Don't keep photos, important documents, books, art, wooden furniture, delicate textiles, food or candles up there — they can warp, grow mould or attract pests. ORGANISE WHAT STAYS
Choose sturdy plastic bins — no cardboard. Cardboard draws moisture and sags. Pick transparent or label specifically:
- Transparent bins — you see what's inside immediately
- Specific labels ('Christmas', 'winter clothing') — not 'misc'
- Heavy boxes at the bottom — lighter and fragile on top
- Use the height with shelving — keep the floor clear
KEEP SEASONAL ITEMS TOGETHER
