For most people the attic is the classic 'someday' zone: things drift up there unnoticed until there's no room left to walk. This guide gives a clear step-by-step plan to clear your attic โ in manageable blocks, with clear choices about what to keep, and an eye for what's better not stored up there.

For most people the attic is the classic 'someday' zone: things drift up there unnoticed until there's no room left to walk. This guide gives a clear step-by-step plan to clear your attic โ in manageable blocks, with clear choices about what to keep, and an eye for what's better not stored up there.
Short answer: start with a goal, work in blocks of one to two hours and sort by category rather than at random. Decide per item: keep, give away, sell or bin. Rule of thumb: if you haven't used something in the past year, chances are it can go. The full method is in our home decluttering guide โ here we zoom in on attic-specific steps.
๐ฏ Set a goal: more space, more overview or a new function
โฑ๏ธ Plan in blocks of 1-2 hours โ not all at once
๐ฆ Get ready: boxes, bin bags, labels and cleaning supplies
๐ฆบ Work safely: good light, ventilation and a dust mask
Take one defined spot of about 2 mยฒ at a time โ not the whole attic at once.
Sort by category โ not at random. Make four bins/zones: keep, give away, sell, bin. In doubt? See our guide on throwing away or storing.
Zone empty? Clean thoroughly straight away and organise.
Remove the excess right away โ or they'll 'be allowed to stay after all'.
An attic swings widely in heat and humidity โ ruinous for certain items. Don't keep photos, important documents, books, art, wooden furniture, delicate textiles, food or candles up there โ they can warp, grow mould or attract pests. Those belong in a dry spot or in climate-controlled storage. Seasonal items can be stored smarter too โ see our guide on seasonal storage for garden furniture, Christmas items and skis.

After sorting comes the real question: what do you do with it all? Keep only what you use and love, give away or sell with a clear deadline, and recycle what's broken. And for things you do want to keep but have no room for at home, storage is the answer โ your attic stays clear without throwing anything away.
โ Keep: what you use and what makes you happy
๐ Give away or sell: always with a clear deadline
โป๏ธ Recycle: hand in broken items, electronics and paint separately
๐ฆ Store: what you keep but have no room for right now
Can't decide? Maybe-box + date in your calendar.
Choose sturdy plastic bins โ no cardboard. Cardboard draws moisture and sags. Pick transparent or label specifically:
Group by season: Christmas, holiday, camping โ each in own bins. Store clean and dry (damp tent or cushion โ mould). Seasonal storage taking up too much space? See our guide on seasonal storage โ we pick up garden furniture or skis and bring them back when you need them.
Stop the attic becoming a dumping ground again. Be strict at the front end โ what doesn't go up there, you won't have to clear later. See our guide on the pitfalls that make clutter come back.
