Books packed in a moving box
Packing books for your move: how to keep them safe

Books are heavier than they look, and their spines break more easily than you'd think. Pack them wrong and you end up with boxes that are too heavy or copies that get damaged. In this guide: how to pack your books so they stay intact and organised, wherever they're headed.

PACKING BOOKS WITHOUT BROKEN SPINES OR BACKACHE

Packing books seems simple, until you lift a box you can't get off the floor. Books are compact but seriously heavy, and their spines and covers damage faster than you'd think. With the right boxes, a few packing tricks and attention to weight, you keep your collection intact and save your back. Here's how, from sorting to stacking in storage.

📦 Small boxes, not big — a big box of books is unliftable.

⅔ Fill to two-thirds — top up the rest with paper or textiles.

📚 Flat or spine down — never spine up.

🏷️ Label contents and room, and mark book boxes 'heavy'.

SORT BEFORE YOU PACK

Go through your collection first — a move or storage is the perfect moment to declutter. The less you pack, the less you haul and unpack. What can often go:

  • Books you probably won't read again (the beginner's Italian, that 2015 thriller)
  • Duplicate copies you don't need
  • Damaged or mouldy copies — belong with paper recycling

Tip: where to send them? Library, charity shop, local street library or a second-hand bookshop. What's left is the collection worth moving.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT BOXES

Avoid big boxes — they get so heavy they tear open or nobody can lift them. Use sturdy small or medium boxes (moving boxes or special book boxes). Practical:

  • Fill boxes about two-thirds full — top up remaining space with packing paper, a folded towel or clothing so books don't shift
  • Tape the bottom extra well in an H-shape — that's where most of the weight lands
  • Always order 20% more boxes than you think you'll need — books fill faster than expected

Tip: consider dedicated book boxes (smaller than standard moving boxes) — designed specifically so you can still lift them when full.

PACK WITHOUT DAMAGE

Lay books flat or upright with the spine down — never spine up. Spine-up makes pages sag and bindings warp. What else matters:

  • Line the bottom of the box with a layer of paper for cushioning
  • Wrap valuable, old or signed copies separately in acid-free paper or bubble wrap
  • Heaviest and largest books at the bottom, paperbacks on top
  • Never pack precious books with anything that can leak or transfer ink

Tip: first edition or signed copy? Store separately in its own box with moisture-absorbing packets for extra protection.

DISTRIBUTE WEIGHT AND LABEL

A box full of books can easily weigh 20 kilos. Distribute smartly: books at the bottom, lighter items on top. Technique and labelling:

  • Lift with your legs, not your back — carry heavy boxes with two people
  • Label each box with contents and room, mark 'heavy' or 'books' clearly
  • Pack your favourite books in a separate, clearly marked box — that's the one you'll want back first

Tip: The Dutch Arbo lifting norm of 25kg per person shows why full book boxes are risky. When in doubt: leave the heavy lifting to the professionals.

STORING BOOKS FOR A WHILE? KEEP THEM DRY

Books are heavy and compact, so they often go into storage first and come out last. The key is keeping them dry — moisture is paper's biggest enemy and warps spines and causes mould. Inbox Storage picks up your boxes at home, stores them dry and secured at our hub in Gouda, and brings them back whenever you want. During a renovation and need your library out of the way?
