Packing instructions

We take great care to transport and store your belongings safely — our entire service depends on it. Proper packing decides whether a tabletop arrives unscratched, a sofa without dents, a mattress without moisture. Our drivers see weekly where things go wrong, and it's always the same: wrong boxes, wrong tape application, damp fabric. That's why: only items packed according to these instructions are covered by our basic insurance. Worth reading through, even if you think you know how.

HOW TO PACK YOUR STUFF SAFELY.

Items that fit in a moving box go into a moving box — it's safer for transport and we can stack better in your unit. For furniture, mattresses and bigger items we use storage blankets, covers and stretch wrap. Two general tips before you start: number all your boxes and keep a content list — handy for interim access, since you can request just one box. And: the better the box quality, the higher we can stack — less space wasted in your unit, less monthly cost. Below: four main groups, with per category what you need and the specific pitfalls.

1. SMALL ITEMS

What you need: moving boxes with double cardboard bottom and packing paper. Cheap boxes sag or deform under weight — that's why the double bottom. Method: place a layer of crumpled paper at the bottom (5-10 cm), wrap each item individually in paper (even items that don't seem fragile — prevents scratches), add crumpled paper between items so they don't bump during transport, finish with a top layer. Seal the box with tape, don't just fold the flaps. Mark fragile items clearly with 'FRAGILE' on the top and sides — so the driver handles with care. Tip: number all your boxes and keep a content list. For interim access you can request a specific box. Important: items inside a moving box are not covered by our basic insurance. We can't inspect contents or verify pre-existing damage, so insurance won't cover it. For valuable or fragile items: pack extra carefully and let us know so we can place them separately in the unit.

2. FURNITURE

Disassemble furniture as far as possible and pack loose parts separately. Per type: SOFAS — pack each section in a sofa cover, tape underneath, leave ventilation room. Tape directly on furniture leaves marks, so only tape on the cover. CHAIRS AND ARMCHAIRS — chair cover on top, cross-tape underneath, secure top with another piece of tape. CABINETS — make sure the cabinet is empty and loose parts (shelves, screws) are disassembled. Wrap a storage blanket around the cabinet and secure with stretch wrap. For drawers: secure with rope or stretch wrap so they don't pop open. TABLES — disassemble legs and pack each in a storage blanket + stretch wrap. Wrap the tabletop fully in a storage blanket and stretch wrap. Corners and edges are most fragile — 80% of damage happens there, so extra cardboard under the blanket at the corners. LOOSE PARTS (screws, small disassembled parts) — in a moving box with packing paper (see section 1), or taped to the furniture itself in a labelled bag. Never store loose screws unsecured — you'll definitely lose them.

3. BEDS, MATTRESSES & GARDEN ITEMS

BEDS — fully disassemble. Fabric parts (boxspring): mattress cover, tape closed, leave openings for ventilation. Wooden and steel bed parts + slats: storage blanket, secure with stretch wrap. Loose parts like slats and screws: in a moving box with packing paper. MATTRESSES — make sure the mattress is clean and dry before packing. A dirty or damp mattress molds in storage and you'll never get it out. Pull a mattress cover over and tape closed, with some openings for ventilation. Dirty mattress? Order a black (opaque) cover — our staff can handle it hygienically without visible stains. GARDEN FURNITURE AND CUSHIONS — also clean thoroughly and dry first. Moisture in garden furniture = mold in storage, and it hits fabric cushions hard. Sofas: sofa cover + tape (same as section 2). Chairs: chair cover. Cushions: mattress cover — pull cover over, tape closed, leave ventilation. Loose parasols, heaters: storage blanket + stretch wrap. Tip: order the right covers at booking — we can bring them along at PickUp.

4. FRAGILE ITEMS

TV AND AUDIO — best option is original packaging, designed for exactly this device. Don't have it? Wrap a storage blanket around the device and secure with stretch wrap. Mark the outside in big letters as FRAGILE. Loose remotes, cables and accessories: tape them to the device in a labelled bag. APPLIANCES (washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, fridge) — roll up cables and hoses and tape them to the device. Let a fridge dry for at least 24 hours before storage (wipe inside). Wrap in storage blanket and stretch wrap. LAMPS — small lamps wrap individually in packing paper and put in a moving box. Lampshades pack separately (they deform easily under pressure), also in a moving box if they fit. Large floor lamps that don't fit in a box: storage blanket + stretch wrap. MIRRORS AND PAINTINGS — extra care here: (1) cover front and back with cardboard, (2) tape the cardboard down on at least 2 points per side (top, left, right, bottom), (3) wrap the whole package in a storage blanket, (4) stretch wrap, (5) mark 'FRAGILE' on the outside. Mirrors and paintings are always carried upright, never stacked flat. That's by far the biggest cause of breakage.

WHAT YOU NEED — MATERIALS OVERVIEW.

Here's what you want at home before we arrive. Moving boxes with double cardboard bottom for small items — the better the quality, the higher we can stack. Packing paper for cushioning and individual protection inside boxes. Storage blankets for furniture, appliances and large items — prevents scratches and bumps. Stretch wrap to keep blankets and covers in place. Sofa covers for sofas, chair covers for chairs and armchairs, mattress covers for mattresses and garden cushions. Tape to seal covers and boxes (not directly on furniture). Cardboard for extra protection on mirrors and paintings. No materials at home? No problem — we can bring them along at PickUp, just ask at booking and we'll make sure the right quantities are there. Finally, the most important point one more time: the basic insurance only applies to items packed according to these instructions. Moving boxes are an exception — they're sealed and we can't inspect contents, so those fall outside coverage. Have valuable fragile items? Tell us at booking and we can arrange extra insurance or special handling.

📦 Good moving boxes (double bottom) + packing paper for small items — each item wrapped individually.

🛋️ Sofa cover, chair cover or storage blanket for furniture — disassemble as far as possible.

💧 Clean and dry before packing — applies to mattresses, garden furniture and cushions.
