A move can cost a few hundred euros or easily run past €3,000 — it depends on your home, the distance and how much you outsource. In this guide we lay out the costs: doing it yourself versus a moving company, what drives the price, and how to save hundreds of euros.
There's no single price for a move. Doing it yourself costs roughly €300 to €800 for a van, boxes and materials; a moving company charges on average €900 to €1,600, rising to €3,000 or more for a large home. The difference comes down to how much you outsource, the size of your household, the distance and the date you pick. Below is what each situation roughly costs. Note: these are 2026 market indications — always request current quotes.
A moving company roughly charges by the size of your household. For a student room or studio you'll pay about €350 to €800, for a two-room apartment €600 to €1,300, and for a three- to four-room home €900 to €1,800. A large or detached house runs to €1,500 to €3,000 or more. That rate usually includes two to four movers (around €35 to €60 per person per hour), a van of the right size and materials like blankets and straps.
Doing it yourself is almost always cheaper, but don't count only the van. A moving van rents for €70 to €250 a day, boxes cost €50 to €150, and small gear (hand truck, blankets, straps, tape) another €50 to €100. Add fuel (€50-€100) and, if you hire help, €15 to €25 per hour per person. Don't forget the hidden costs: a day off, food and drinks for your helpers, and the risk of damage.
Five things set your bill: the size of your household (more stuff = bigger van and more hours), the distance (a long trip within the Netherlands adds up), extra services (packing, disassembly, a furniture lift from around €150 per day), how accessible your home is (narrow street, a floor without a lift), and the date. Movers charge more on weekends, at month-end and in summer (June-August).
Moving far within the Netherlands — say Amsterdam to Maastricht, about 250 kilometres — expect €500 to €1,000 extra on top of the normal rate, for travel time and fuel. Individual extras add up too: a furniture lift, packing service or (dis)assembly are charged separately. Agree exactly what is and isn't included in the quote, so there are no surprises afterwards.
The biggest saving is in moving yourself — but that gets tricky when your old and new homes don't line up neatly, or when you want to move in stages. That's where storage at home helps. Inbox Storage picks up your belongings at home, stores them dry and secured at our hub in Gouda, and brings them back whenever you want. So you can move calmly in stages without costly double trips, and how much lifting help you'd like is your choice at booking.

Choosing between DIY and outsourcing comes down to money versus convenience — and your situation. Here's the trade-off, plus the saving tips that pay off most.
DIY is the cheapest and you set the pace. But you'll lose a (long) weekend, you need strong friends, and you carry the risk of damage to your belongings, the home or your back. Smart for small households, short distances and when you're flexible on the date. Combine it with temporary storage if you can't fit everything in one trip.
A moving company costs more, but you're hiring experience, materials and manpower. You typically get two to four movers, the right van and protective materials. Especially handy for large or heavy households, stairs without a lift, or when you simply have no time or help. Request at least three quotes and check carefully what is and isn't included.
The biggest savings: move midweek and mid-month (easily hundreds of euros), declutter first so you have less volume, and get boxes and materials second-hand. Book four to six weeks ahead for the best price and availability. And always compare several quotes — research by the Dutch consumers' association Consumentenbond found differences of up to 56% (around €400) between the highest and lowest quote.
📆 Move midweek or mid-month — noticeably cheaper.
🧹 Declutter first: less volume = fewer hours and a smaller van.
📦 Get boxes and materials second-hand or borrow them.
🔍 Request at least 3 quotes and compare what's included.
The questions we hear most about the cost of moving — answered briefly.
Expect €300-€800 for a DIY move and on average €900-€1,600 for a moving company, rising to €3,000 or more for a large home. A studio is cheapest, a detached house most expensive.
Usually, but not always. With a large household, stairs without a lift, or when you hire help and take a day off, the costs and risk add up. Factor in the hidden costs before you decide.
Tipping isn't required, but €10 to €20 per mover, or about 5% of the total bill, is common. Good service, heavy stairs or extra effort can factor in.
Sometimes. If you move for work and your employer covers nothing, or the move is forced (for example by divorce or eviction), costs may be deductible. For an ordinary, voluntary move, unfortunately not. Always check your own situation with the Dutch tax office.
Book a moving company at least four to six weeks ahead, and earlier if you're moving in a busy period (summer, month-end, weekend). Booking early gives more choice and often a better price.
