Storage in Amsterdam: a full overview of your options.

Living tight in a canal apartment, moving between two homes, or doing a year abroad — more people in Amsterdam are looking for storage than ever. But self storage, mobile storage boxes, and door-to-door variants differ massively in price, convenience and flexibility. In this guide: which one fits your situation, what the main providers charge, and when mobile is smarter than classic.

WHICH STORAGE TYPE FITS WHICH SITUATION?

In Amsterdam there are three main storage types: classic self storage (you drive to a unit, your own key), mobile storage boxes (a container in front of your door, you fill it, then it goes to a warehouse), and smart storage (we drive, pick up, store, and return — you manage via an app). Plus: friends/family or a private garage. Which one fits depends on how often you need access, how much time you have, and whether you've got a van handy. Here's the rundown — including when an option is not right for you.

Still wondering why to consider external storage at all? See that overview first — then these options land in context.

🚪 Need frequent access (weekly/daily)? Classic self storage is your best bet — Shurgard, Allsafe or OKEBOX have units in Amsterdam-Noord and Diemen.

🚐 Load once, then park it? Mobile storage — we drive to your door (Inbox), or a container gets placed at your door (Kubox/Pickupbox).

📱 No time for round trips? Smart storage with an app — book from your couch, pick up at your door, manage from your phone.

💸 Student or short-term? Monthly cancellation matters most. Avoid long contracts with exit fees.

1. CLASSIC SELF STORAGE

The big, well-known names: Shurgard (oldest in NL), Allsafe (second in market share), Bo-Rent (big in rentals and self storage), OKEBOX (smaller, newer). You rent your own unit (from 1m³ to 50m³+), get a key or access code, and can usually access it 24/7. Ideal for people who literally want to visit their belongings. Advantages:

  • 24/7 access to your own unit
  • Sizes from 1m³ to 50m³+ available
  • Ideal for business owners with stock or hobbyists with regular access needs
  • Locations in Amsterdam-Noord, Diemen, Zuidoost

Downside: you're responsible for all the logistics — renting a van, lifting, parking. And 24/7 access is always priced in, even if you never come. See our full self-storage vs. mobile storage comparison for the cost implications.

2. MOBILE STORAGE BOX

Kubox and Pickupbox drop an empty container at your door. You fill it yourself; they pick it up and store it in a warehouse. Mid-term access usually isn't possible — containers get stacked in a storage hall. When this fits:

  • One-off move or renovation
  • You know you won't need anything for a few months
  • You don't want to rent a van but you do want to load yourself

Downside: you still do the lifting, and you get a fixed term — if it runs late you renew or sign a new contract. Impractical for unpredictable durations.

3. SMART STORAGE (INBOX)

The combination of mobile storage and self storage. We drive to your door in Amsterdam, load your belongings and drive them to our secure, climate-controlled hub. Manage everything from an app. Who this suits:

  • Movers who need bridging time
  • Expats temporarily in NL (or about to leave)
  • Urbanites short on space with winter wardrobe or guest gear
  • Anyone who doesn't need their stuff weekly but wants to keep an overview

Downside: no 24/7 access. Visits by appointment work, but if you need something every week that's impractical. See how we work for the full process.

4. OTHER OPTIONS

Sometimes the answer isn't a professional provider. Other options that can work — or not:

  • Own garage or shed — handy if you have one, expensive to rent in Amsterdam
  • At friends or family — fine for a few boxes, painful for a whole household
  • Container rental — works if you have a garden to park it, usually not in Amsterdam

Reality: for most Amsterdam apartment dwellers these options are impractical — no room for a container at the door (and a parking permit for a moving container via the municipality costs time and money), no shed out back, family often lives in equally small homes. But for short-term within the city: a day at your parents' or borrowing space from a friend can work.
