Self storage vs. a lock-up garage: which to choose?

A lock-up garage often looks like the cheapest way to store your stuff. But is it actually right for what you want to keep? An uninsulated garage is a very different thing from a dry, secured storage space. In this guide we compare a garage, self storage and mobile storage on the points that really matter: cost, security, damp and convenience.

GARAGE VS. SELF STORAGE: THE DIFFERENCE

Short answer: a garage is cheap and always accessible with your own key, but it's usually uninsulated, damp and unmonitored. Professional storage is dry, heated, camera-monitored and insurable. For robust items that can take a knock a garage works fine; for valuable or sensitive belongings, professional storage is far safer.

1. PRICE

A garage usually has the lowest bare rent — but nothing is included. Professional storage costs more, but security, a dry and heated space and often service come with it. With a garage, factor in the hidden costs too: arranging transport yourself, your own lock, and sometimes a deposit or sign-up fee.

2. SECURITY & DAMP

This is the biggest difference. A garage is usually uninsulated: colder, damper and prone to mould — not ideal for furniture, electronics or clothing over longer periods. And without cameras or an alarm it's more vulnerable to break-ins. Professional storage is clean, dry, heated and monitored, so your belongings stay in good shape.

3. ACCESS

With a garage you can get in any time with your own key. Self storage is open during set hours or with an access pass. With mobile storage the unit stays closed until an agreed moment — handy if you don't need to get in often. So think ahead about how often you really want access.

4. CONVENIENCE

A garage is rarely close to home, so you drive back and forth and haul everything yourself. Mobile storage is built around convenience: the unit comes to you, you fill it at your own pace and it's collected again. How much help you want is up to you.

WHAT CAN AND CAN'T YOU STORE?

A garage is fine for robust items that handle cold and damp: tools, bikes, garden furniture or seasonal gear. Valuable or sensitive belongings are better kept dry and secured. Note: hazardous materials — paint, petrol, other flammable liquids and food — are never allowed in storage. You'll find exactly what is and isn't allowed on our prohibited-items page.

WHAT DOES IT COST — AND WHAT SUITS YOU?

The cheapest option on paper isn't always the best value. A garage has a low bare rent, but you often pay separately for a lock, sometimes a deposit, and you arrange transport yourself. Professional storage includes more in the price. So look beyond the monthly rate at what you actually get — and how long you need it.

CHOOSE A GARAGE IF…

…your budget is tight, you mainly need to store robust items where cold and damp don't matter, you want free access with your own key, and you don't need service or climate control. Also handy as a workshop space.

CHOOSE SELF STORAGE IF…

…you have valuable or sensitive belongings that need to stay dry and secured, you want regular access, or you're storing for a longer period and want control over size and access.

CHOOSE MOBILE STORAGE IF…

…you need temporary extra space for a move or renovation and don't fancy driving back and forth and hauling. The unit comes to you, you load once, and we keep everything safe and climate-controlled until you want it back.

DON'T FORGET INSURANCE

Storage providers usually aren't liable for damage, so arrange proper cover and don't cancel your home contents insurance during a move. At Inbox Storage, only items packed according to our packing instructions are covered by the basic insurance — so pack fragile things well.
