Flexible storage rental: minimum period, extending and pausing

Flexible storage rental with us means: choose a minimum period from 1 to 12 months, extend monthly afterwards, adjust volume or service level along the way, and have your unit move with you to a new address. This guide: what you can do, what you can't, and which choice fits which situation.

FLEXIBLE IN FOUR WAYS

Flexible storage rental means the solution moves with what happens in your life — not the other way around. With mobile storage, that flexibility runs on four axes: how long you rent, how much space, where we come, and how much help you choose. Below: everything possible, plus the honest limits.

DURATION: YOUR MINIMUM PERIOD, THEN MONTHLY

You choose a minimum rental period when booking: 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. The longer you commit, the lower the monthly rate — with increasing discount up to 25%.

  • 1 month: standard rate, no discount — maximum freedom, usually chosen when duration is unknown.
  • 3 months: 5% discount on the monthly rate — the sweet spot between freedom and value.
  • 6 months: 10% discount — for when you know you'll need at least half a year.
  • 12 months: 25% discount + price guarantee — if you find the same space cheaper elsewhere, we match the price.
  • After your minimum period, the agreement automatically extends per full month with a 14-day notice period. You're never locked in longer than your chosen minimum period plus one month at most.

Tip: unsure? Our data from over 4,700 customers shows 45% choose 3 months and 25% choose 1 month. For full pricing per period and volume, see what storage costs per month.

VOLUME: SCALE UP OR DOWN ON REQUEST

With mobile storage you rent storage space, not a fixed box. On request we can scale your package up or down — units combine in steps of 4, 6 and 8m³.

  • Need more? We place an extra unit during an in-between trip — your monthly rate is adjusted proportionally.
  • Need less? Same — one unit physically returned, contract adjusted down.
  • One point to be clear about: we rent space, not contents. If you have less to store within your existing units but the number of units stays the same, the price doesn't change. Physically downscaling means returning one or more units.
  • In practice, about 20% of our customers use in-between volume adjustments. For most customers the initial estimate (via calculator or advisory call) is accurate enough.

Tip: unsure about volume at the start? In how much storage space you need you'll find references per home type for a solid first estimate.

LOCATION: CHANGE ADDRESS OR MOVE ALONG

Unlike traditional self storage, with us you're not stuck to one physical location. You can change pickup and return addresses later — also if you move in the meantime.

  • New home after 3 months of storage? We come to the new address — you don't have to reload anything yourself.
  • Pickup in Utrecht, return in Rotterdam? Possible — one contract, one invoice.
  • Also international: Netherlands to Belgium (or vice versa) as standard.
  • Change requests via customer service; any new transport costs are communicated clearly upfront before we execute.

Tip: the location-freedom argument is one of the main differences with self storage. In self storage vs. mobile storage we lay out all the differences.

SERVICE PACKAGE: CHOOSE AGAIN PER PICKUP

For each pickup or return, you choose the service level that suits that moment. You're not locked into one choice for the whole contract.

  • Bring it yourself for pickup, fully handled for return? Possible.
  • Same service for your whole contract? Also fine — just make the same choice each time.
  • Handy when your situation changes: first time you had help from friends, second time you don't need it — or the other way around.
  • Any in-between change goes via advisory call or email; we confirm the new terms before executing.

WHY THIS FLEXIBILITY IS DIFFERENT FROM SELF STORAGE

Our data from over 4,700 customers shows: 45% choose a minimum period of 3 months, 25% go for 1 month with maximum freedom, and the remaining 30% split almost evenly between 6 and 12 months (about 15% each). Formally, customers commit to 4.53 months on average — but the actual storage story lasts 8 months on average. Flexible extending is the norm, not the exception.

According to the European Self Storage Industry Report 2025 by FEDESSA, storage customers fall into two groups: short stays (3 to 9 months) and long stays (2 years or more). Our structure of minimum periods plus monthly extension serves both groups without separate contracts — you don't have to decide upfront whether you're in the short or long group.

With traditional self storage, you're often stuck to a specific box size at a specific location for a specific minimum term. With mobile storage, you rent space that adapts: more units added, units removed, move along to a new address, service level chosen again per pickup. That freedom is built into the model — not something you pay extra for.

FAQ ABOUT FLEXIBLE STORAGE RENTAL

The questions that come up most about flexibility — including honest answers about what isn't possible.

CAN I STOP EARLIER THAN MY MINIMUM PERIOD?

No, the minimum period is fixed — that's how you get the associated discount. There is flexibility before pickup though.

  • Legally you have 14 days after booking to cancel without obligation.
  • For extra flexibility: within 48 hours of booking you can add a €50 booking insurance allowing free cancellation up to 7 days before pickup.
  • Unsure about duration? Choose the shortest period (1 month, no discount) for maximum freedom. In practice 25% of our customers do this.

WHAT IF I WANT LONGER THAN MY MINIMUM PERIOD?

Automatic: after the minimum period, the agreement extends per full month with a 14-day notice period.

  • No action needed from your side — you just continue renting at the same monthly rate.
  • Want to stop? Give 14 days' notice via customer service.
  • Our data shows the average customer actually uses storage for 8 months — almost double the average formal contract duration of 4.53 months. Extending is normal, not exceptional.

CAN I USE LESS SPACE?

Yes, downgrade is possible on request at any time. One point to be clear about: we rent space, not contents.

  • On request we reduce the number of units and adjust the monthly rate proportionally.
  • If you have fewer items within your existing units (but the unit count stays the same), the price doesn't change — you rent the space, not what's in it.
  • So physically downscaling means: one or more units returned, either via an in-between pickup trip or combined with a regular return.
  • About 20% of our customers ever adjust volume. For most, the initial estimate (via calculator or advice) is accurate enough to stay unchanged.

CAN I PAUSE MY STORAGE?

Technically yes, in practice almost never used — and usually not the most logical choice.

  • You can have the units emptied but keep renting the space (paying without anything stored). Financially usually not attractive.
  • What works: have things returned and book again later when you need storage. That way you pay nothing in between.
  • For uncertain situations (e.g. renovation running long): start with a short minimum period and extend monthly until you know how much longer you need.

Tip: with renovations, duration often turns out different than expected. In storage during your renovation you'll read how customers usually set that up.

WHICH RENTAL PERIOD FITS MY SITUATION?

Choose based on how certain you are of the duration — not on how long you think you need.

  • No idea how long: 1 month (25% of our customers). No discount, maximum freedom.
  • Probably 2–4 months: 3 months (45% of our customers). -5% discount, the most chosen option.
  • Sure of at least 6 months: 6 months (15% of our customers). -10% discount.
  • Sure of at least a year: 12 months (15% of our customers). -25% discount plus price guarantee: find the same space cheaper elsewhere and we match the price.

Tip: for seasonal storage (garden furniture, ski gear, Christmas decorations) 3- or 6-month agreements are usually ideal. See seasonal storage for concrete use-cases.
