Moving an apartment is more than pulling up the van and loading. Narrow stairs, a small lift, tricky parking and the owners'-association rules make it a bit more complicated than a ground-floor move. This guide shows how to choose between lift, stairwell or furniture lift, how to measure and plan your furniture and passages, and which mistakes to avoid.

Short answer: measure your large furniture and the passages — lift, stairwell and doors — well in advance, disassemble what you can, and decide whether you need a furniture lift. Reserve the shared lift, arrange a parking spot for the van and inform your neighbours and the owners' association. That preparation prevents surprises on moving day.
A regular passenger lift usually suffices for boxes and smaller furniture, but large sofas, cabinets and beds rarely fit — so measure the internal size and the door opening, and mind the maximum load for heavy appliances. If it has to go via the stairwell, that's physically the hardest: narrow turns and steep stairs call for disassembly, good lifting technique and enough manpower.
If the sofa won't fit through the stairwell, or you live high up without a usable internal lift, an external furniture lift is the solution — and the safest option for heavy or fragile large furniture. If the lift or van stands on the public road, you often need a municipal permit or temporary traffic measure; apply for it well in advance and watch for loading windows and low-emission zones in the city centre.
Measure all your large furniture and every passage well in advance, and disassemble what you can — keep screws in a labelled bag taped to the item. If a furniture lift is coming, check that your window can open fully (sometimes the hinges have to come off) and clear the balcony. That way you're sure the sofa actually gets through and inside.
Reserve the shared lift for a time slot where possible — you usually can't block it all day. Arrange a parking spot or permit for the van, check the owners'-association rules on moving times, and inform your neighbours with a note. Protect floors, the stairs and the lift walls, so you're not held liable for damage to communal areas.
A handy timeline: about four weeks ahead, measure everything, decide whether you need a furniture lift and apply for any parking permit. Two weeks ahead, inform the owners' association, reserve the lift and start packing. A week ahead, inform the neighbours and label your boxes. The day before, clear the route and disassemble the last furniture; on moving day, cordon off the parking spot and don't forget the storage room or basement box.

Most problems with an apartment move can be prevented with good preparation. These are the mistakes that most often go wrong, followed by the questions we get asked most.
Yes if your large furniture doesn't fit through the stairwell, or if you live high up without a usable internal lift. It's also the safest way for heavy and fragile pieces. Assess the need at least three to four weeks ahead and book right away, as furniture lifts are popular.
Usually yes, but check the owners'-association rules on moving times — in many buildings you can't block the lift all day. Reserve a time slot, and protect the walls and mirrors with blankets or cardboard, so you don't cause damage to the shared lift.
First measure the sofa, the lift and the stair turn. If it fits via the lift or stairs, disassemble what you can and lift with enough people. If it doesn't fit, the sofa goes in through the window or balcony via a furniture lift — just check that the window can open fully.
Plan this as one of the first things, about three to four weeks ahead. A municipal parking permit or traffic measure for the furniture lift needs processing time, and the good lifts and companies are quickly fully booked around peak days.
